2018 Goals

It’s time for me to set my 2018 goals and this pretty much sums up how I feel:

Because the thing is I didn’t do so well at reaching last year’s goals, and this year I’d like to spend less time working, and Other Me has already set some ambitious goals and I don’t own a TARDIS…

So… where does that leave me?

Well, to start I want to finish up the 2017 Goals that I didn’t quite accomplish. Goals like:

  • Finalize the Author Guide for Pen and Kink Publishing and begin distributing it
  • Formalize the style guide for Pen and–you know what? Nah, I kinda like having ‘Something like a style guide’
  • Edit and publish “The Longest Night”
  • Edit and publish “The Coolest Wife Ever” now known as “The Switch”
  • Publish a collection of all the “She’s on the Bottom” stories
  • Finish writing and editing the untitled novelette/novella? about Ben and Maggie
  • Write at least one more story in the Paranormal Circus series.
  • Write and share a holiday-themed story set in the Paranormal Circus series

And because I don’t want to spend this year solely focused on the things I didn’t do last year I would also like to:

  • Successfully publish and launch Magic Spark
  • Successfully publish and launch Magic Ember
  • Successfully publish and launch Magic Flame
  • Successfully publish and launch Triskaidekaphilia 3: Transformed
  • Acquire a new project for Pen and Kink
  • Write at least one short story and submit it for publication rather than publishing it myself*
  • Write the next title in the ‘Running on Empty‘ serial

That looks like plenty of projects to fill a year, yeah?

*I chose submitting as my goal because that is within my control, whether the story is accepted somewhere or published is not.

You’ll be enchanted!

I am so excited!

It seems like ages since I first approached some of my favourite authors and asked them to write me a trilogy of interconnected novellas that were magical and romantic, but now the first results of that email are hitting the shelves!

It’s available now!

The first of a trio of trilogies by three amazing romance writers. These stories all have two things in common: magic and romance!

“When Demigods Court Death” by Wendy Sparrow:
As the demigod of fertility, Aster Slone has a thriving doctor’s practice. In fact, the incidence of triplets has made it too thriving. He needs more time with his neighbor the demigoddess of death to dampen his powers. Chandra Linton being gorgeous and sweet makes his task less of a hardship. Hitting the zenith of heretofore-unknown powers without enough exposure to her match is killing Chandra. Accepting all that her crazy, but hot neighbor says is her destiny…well, it muddles her convictions, but her real concern is: does Aster want Chandra because she’s the woman he desires or because she’s Death?

“These Roots Run Deep” by Em Shotwell:
Spitfire, New Orleans weather girl, Cheyanne Murphey has everything, and that is exactly how she likes it. When she discovers evidence of her fiancé’s philandering, she refuses to let her perfectly cultivated image fall to pieces. Cheyanne has worked too hard, dragging herself up from the trailer park into New Orleans’ society, to give in without a fight…even if that means trading a year of her life in exchange for a love incantation from her ancestor’s spell book.
A skyclad, moonlit dance, a mysterious potion, and magic gone awry leave Cheyanne with a very peculiar life lesson: love can take on many forms, so be careful what you wish for.

“Destiny’s Dark Light — Part One” by Sara Dobie Bauer:
In modern day Charleston, lonely white witch Cyan Burroughs has waited her whole life to lead the battle against dark witches and eventually meet the man she is fated to love. A tragic trolley accident brings Liam Cody into her life. He is her destiny, but he’s also in love with someone else. Now, Cyan and her magic family must find the dark witch who caused the accident while Cyan fights her feelings for Liam—a charming Irishman with secrets of his own.

If you are familiar with the work of any of these ladies you’ll have some idea of what to expect. Wendy is writing about powerful demigods who are grappling with very mortal things (like love) alongside things like the possibility of dying horribly if they don’t find their mate, Em is writing about complex relationships, and sisters, and intentions and Sara is taking us to Charleston where Cyan, who is both an ‘Every Girl’ and incredibly unique is about to have her life turned upside down.

Each one of these stories is incredibly different from the others, but somehow this collection still works, and I think you’re going to be enchanted! 😉

Looking Back at 2017

At the start of each year I set goals for myself, share them publicly (for accountability) and then at the end of the year I assess how well I did in reaching them.

I started 2017 off like this:

And I ended it something like this:

And to show you why I’m going to break down all my 2017 goals one by one, looking at what I did and didn’t do… Items are are bolded are goals I consider achieved.

2017 Goals:

This year is going to be one of doing a lot of things behind the scenes. That stuff isn’t particularly sexy, but it does need to be done. For example:

  • Create an Author Guide for Pen and Kink
    • While this isn’t totally complete I think most of the hard work is and right now it just needs an introduction and a bit of clean-up and it will be good to go. I’m going to count this as done even though it’s not quite, because it took a lot of work that I feel I ought to recognize.
  • Formalize the Style Guide for Pen and Kink
    • Totally nope. The Style Guide for Pen and Kink is still in a .doc file entitled ‘Something Like a Style Guide’ so… yeah…

On a demon-y level I want to:

  • Publish “Circles Within Circles”
    • I did this, so yay! However, I think I made a mistake with the cover and I’m going to need to get a new one and re-publish it. So… that’s less fun?
  • Edit and publish “The Longest Night”
    • Not yet. Though I do have an editor lined up, so that’s progress? I guess?

Under Glass for “She’s on the Bottom” I want to:

  • Edit and publish “The Coolest Wife Ever”
    • …I still haven’t figured out how to end this one. *sigh*
  • Publish a collection of all the “She’s on the Bottom” stories
    • Not yet, it’s still waiting on me to finish “The Coolest Wife Ever” which I’ve actually re-titled again to “The Switch”.

Related to “Paranormal Circus” Under Glass I want to:

  • Finish writing and editing the untitled novelette/novella? about Ben and Maggie
  • Write at least one more story in this series.
    • Preferably two 😉
  • Write and share a holiday-themed story set in this series

I didn’t get any of my Paranormal Circus goals accomplished. I made progress on them, but nothing very exciting. I’m just really, really failing at consistency when it comes to this series. I don’t think it’s because of the stories though, I think it’s because Other Me was pretty over-scheduled. If I don’t make progress on them this year, however, I’m definitely going to need to consider dropping this project. Which will make me sad because there’s something about these stories that really, really inspires me.

…which might be part of the problem. They are actually kind of intimidating — trying to get everything to connect together correctly and layer properly. It’s sort of paralyzing.

I’ve also got some editing and publishing-related goals. First, for editing:

  • Release and promote kINKED — beating the sales I had for Rough Edges
    • Rough Edges sells better than kINKED. Guess people just like cowboys more than ink, or at least the audience i’ve managed to reach so far.
  • Have a successful submission period for the anthology I’ll be co-editing with Laura Harvey (details to come)
    • We had to postpone this anthology indefinitely.
  • Read submissions to the World Weaver Press open submission period with an eye toward picking up one paranormal romance to edit in 2017 for publication in 2018
    • Read. Requested. We’ll see how it goes.
  • Edit the Enchanted series (all three books)
    • Finishing up the editing on this but we’re only a wee bit behind schedule and had lots of challenges so I’m counting it as a win.

And lastly, as a micro-publisher at Pen and Kink

  • Publish and promote kINKED
  • Publish and promote Legendary edited by Laura Harvey
  • Publish and promote Ravenous edited by Ariel Jade
  • Line up an editor for the third book in the series
  • Continue to promote our existing titles. In part through a big sale in February.
  • Prepare the Enchanted series for release in early 2018
  • Publish the Demon-y and Under Glass stories mentioned above
    • This is kind of a repeat from my goal above… but kind of not

…so, I’m not really sure how I feel about 2017. As an editor and a publisher I feel like I did okay, but I really fell down as a writer. I did have a story in Covalent Bonds though, which makes me happy because I’d like to continue to ensure that all my writing isn’t self-published.

But still.

Not a bad year, professionally, by any means. But not a great one either.

I’m looking forward to dedicating more time and attention to my own writing in 2018. *fingers crossed*

Naughty Teasers: Stealing Time

The Naughty List came out over two years ago.

Two years!

I know, how crazy is that? Honestly, it breaks my brain a little bit to think about it, in fact I triple-checked to make sure that I was right.

Wow.

Anyway, ’tis the season so over the next few days I’m going to share some excerpts from the stories in The Naughty List with you. I hope you enjoy them 🙂

Stealing Time

Wendy Sparrow

As Father Time’s son, Zeit must sacrifice a mortal’s lifetime each New Year’s Eve to the Fates. Last year, inexplicably really, he made an 11:59 substitution. The Fates are pissed and they’ve been after his mortal Hannah. With the year ending, he ought to figure out why he’d saved her—and kept doing it.

Following an unlucky year, Hannah needs a week’s holiday in a lodge to unwind. What she gets is near-death experiences and a sexy immortal who can’t avoid kissing her, but might have to kill her. After all, even Zeit can’t hold back time indefinitely.

Excerpt:

She blew her plans immediately when she entered the lodge’s dining room a half an hour later. He was sitting by himself and, hell, she was going to get to the bottom of this.

She strode through the dining hall just as he was taking a sip from a glass. As she slid into the seat across from him, he smiled over the rim.

“Please, have a seat.” He set his glass down, licking his lips.

Jeanie was right—his being hot did matter. She was going to have a hard time concentrating on anything other than his mouth.

“Why are you following me?” She jabbed a finger in his direction.

He raised his eyebrows and looked around—the picture of innocence. “I was here first.”

“No, not right now. You know I’m not referring to that. You know something about what keeps happening to me. I know you do.”

The waiter delivered his food and a glass of water for her. Zeit smiled, nodded his thanks and sat back, without touching it.

When the waiter turned to her, looking expectant, she glanced around and reached for the menu before shaking her head. “Uhh, can I just have what he’s having?”

After the waiter left, Hannah stared at his plate. It smelled good. “What did I just order?”

“Quail gizzards filled with snake bile on top of maggots.”

Her stomach turned even though she knew he was lying. Idiot.

Zeit sat there—doing his intense and carnal thing. “Be careful what you ask for, Hannah, because you might not appreciate the answers you receive.”

When he said her name, a chill inched across her skin, ending with a fluttering in her already anxious stomach. Being attracted to him would be so inconvenient.

“What are you doing to me?”

“What do you think I’m doing?”

She glared at him. Saying it out loud would sound utterly stupid. “I keep having these lapses of time. One minute, I’m in one place and, the next, I’m in another. And four times now, I’ve seen you walking away from me when it’s happened.”

“So, you’re accusing me of doing something to your memory? Or of stalking you?” He took another sip of his drink as if he was only mildly interested in her response.

Wendy’s childhood as a military brat instilled in her a wanderlust to travel, but with the possibility of bugs, lost luggage, germs, a lack of parking, she just prefers the cleaner and safer visits to exciting places in her stories. It has very little to do with her obsessive compulsive disorder—maybe.  She is a passionate advocate both online and in her community for the welfare of autistic children.  In addition to writing, she enjoys painting and sketching, spending time with her two quirky kids, and running with her dog. Her wonderful husband makes sure she has the geeky, tech aspects of her stories just right.  She can often be found on Twitter where she will strike up a conversation with anyone she happens across.

Naughty Teasers: Winter’s Daughter

The Naughty List came out over two years ago.

Two years!

I know, how crazy is that? Honestly, it breaks my brain a little bit to think about it, in fact I triple-checked to make sure that I was right.

Wow.

Anyway, ’tis the season so over the next few days I’m going to share some excerpts from the stories in The Naughty List with you. I hope you enjoy them 🙂

Winter’s Daughter

Doug Blakeslee

A child of the Fae, seeking a mate in the world of mortals is bound to winter and a promise given to her chosen. She must claim him before time runs out and all she loves falls to ruin. A child of mortals, torn from his desire and seeking to return. His love of winter could be his salvation. Or his doom. Can their fairy tale be happily ever after?

Excerpt:

Peals of thunder shook the mountainside, shaking snow from the trees and shattering icicles. The clouds scuttled away to the far edges of the realm to reveal the pale winter moon. Glamour swirled around her in a stream of blue and white, flowing into the arch.

Her sister tore away from her grasp and fled into the trees with a shriek, vanishing in flurry of white. Vergla sulked back into the trees, eyes a glitter with malice and hate.

Etina ignored them, stepping toward the arch. Hope blossomed in her chest as sparks of blue luminescence raced along the carved vines, jumping across the gaps, filling the center. Faster and faster they came to merge into a single disc of energy. She took a step back as a roaring wind burst forth from the arch, then leaped through.

Wind, snow, and ice howled through the portal, as it spit her onto the deserted mountainside. Stars twinkled in a clear sky and the moon glittered off a layer of snow covering the grounds and trees.

Etina danced across the snow, twirling and laughing, her feet leaving no tracks. She was free to run and frolic and chase; clad in nothing more than a belt with a cloth pouch on her hip. Her heart fluttered and mind exploded at the myriad of possibilities before her. Not just the freedom, but the desire and want that burned from the core of her body. An urge, long overdue for satiation, screamed at her to act, that there would be time for levity later on.

Lights blazed at the bottom of the valley, as she glided toward the nearest and pressed against the wood and stone side of the building, soaking in the passion of its occupants.

The couple lay upon the bed, the woman astride her partner, hips rocking back and forth. His hands were bound to the headboard with ties of silk, lust written large on his face. Groans and yelps of desire filtered through the wall and she drank in the heady brew of emotions that accompanied them. They brought back memories of Byron and long ago that reinvigorated her and set her resolve.

Come to me, Byron. Let fate bring us together once more. She cast out the threads of magic to the wind, hoping one would find its way to her love.

The author lives in the Pacific Northwest and spends his time writing, cooking, gaming, and watching hockey. His interest in books and reading started early thanks to his parents, though his serious attempts at writing only started a few years ago. From time to time he blogs about writing and other related topics at The Simms Project at http://thesimmsproject.blogspot.com/.

To date, he’s published almost 20 short stories in such anthologies as: Someone Wicked, Astrologica: Stories of the Zodiac, Fossil Lake 1 & II, and A Chimerical World: Tales of the Unseelie Court. His current project is an urban fantasy novel about a war between the Fae. He can be reached on Facebook or simms.doug@gmail.com.
