Alexa Piper’s 7-7-7-7 Challenge

The 7-7-7-7 Challenge

By Alexa Piper

Have you ever heard of a 7-7-7-7 challenge?

No? Well, I will give you about thirty seconds to fantasize about what it might be; go.

If you are done with that, let me explain what it really is. (And in case you thought it might run along the lines of 7 times in 7 hours, 7 different positions and 7 different toys, then no, that one’s a different challenge.)

The 7-7-7-7 challenge is a writer’s challenge, and it goes something like this: go to the 7th page of a work in progress, 7 lines down, post the next 7 lines, and challenge 7 more writers. TJ Dodd threw the digital gauntlet my way. (Thanks, TJ!)

Cori kindly offered me her online home for the purpose of posting my excerpt; she’s just nice like that, y’all!

So without further ado, I’ll give you seven lines, taken from the seventh page of a current work in progress:

The tall stranger finally let go of her hand. He left her standing to look around the ship’s interior, dark metal bathed in fluorescent light. Some of the wall paneling had been removed and the circuitry beneath lay exposed. Malin was not intimately familiar with a dandelion’s basic blueprints, but she could see that the vessel had been, well, customized.

Her head whipped around when she heard the ramp’s hydraulics move to close.

“Whoa, wait just a minute there,” she said.

“Wait for what?” he said. “It don’t seem like you got a minute to waste.” His eyes met hers, held them until she submitted, looked down. The stranger was right, and Malin hated that.

And now I guess I get to challenge people! Yay! As I was challenged through Twitter (@ProwlingPiper in case anyone wants to follow) that’s gonna be how I’ll be challenging people. Let’s see what people what the writers are writing I say. 🙂

Hmph!

So, even though Laura didn’t tag me in her 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 Challenge I’m going to do it anyway*.

The idea is you go to the seventh line of the seventh page of your current WIP and then you post the next seven lines. I’m writing this story out longhand as part of Erotica Under Glass so my pages and lines might be weird lengths compared to someone who is typing. Even so, this is what the results of my challenge look like:

…and once they were there Jacob would know what to do. Liam hadn’t changed in the years since she’d last seen him, she prayed the same could be said for Jake. The Jake she knew would help the kids, even if he still hated her, he would help them.

I’m not going to tag anyone for this but if you like challenges and you want to play along please do — and then leave a link to your blog post about it either here or on Twitter so I can see 🙂

*I’m not really pouting, I’m just being bratty. The thing about using a pen name is that sometimes things like this become weirdly complicated in ways you can’t even begin to anticipate.

Erotica Under Glass Update

I have good news and I have bad news…

The good news is that I’m writing a lot more than I was in previous months and, allowing that what I’m writing are first drafts and first drafts are never actually good, I’m enjoying what I’m writing.

The bad news is that I will be lucky to reach 45 hours of writing this month, let alone the 90 I had set as my original goal.

[wppb progress=12]

That’s what my progress looks like, and I’m going to have to take most of today off writing to meet some editing deadlines so the bar isn’t going to move much until tomorrow.

http://www.guyradar.com/photos/in-the-mood-for-a-rugged-cowboy/attachment/rugged-man-masculine-shirtless-cowboy-8Right now I’m working on a post-apocalyptic story with kinky characters (it was supposed to be a top, a bottom and a switch but the switch has turned out to be more submissive than the bottom. Go figure.). That dude to the right there? He’s the model for the top.

You’re welcome 🙂

The story needs work, like any first draft, but I think it’s pretty promising… unfortunately it’s also promising to turn into a novel if I don’t find some way to nip it in the bud so while I’m doing edit-y things today that’s going to be whirling away in the back of my mind. It can turn it into a novel later if I still want to, but for writing under glass I need shorter pieces so I can complete several of them, not just one novel. This isn’t NaNoWriMo LOL We’ll see what happens, it might just end up with a non-ending for an ending so I can move on to something new for a while.

Maybe.

There’s still time to send me a prompt in the meantime. 🙂

Oh, and I’ve decided I’ll stay ‘Under Glass’ until I hit 90 hours of writing, even though that’s going to take me beyond September. At this rate it might even take me into November and NaNoWriMo, but I’m okay with that.

🙂

Skye Falling Excerpt

I don’t have much blogging time today, not if I want to put a dent in my Erotica Under Glass goals (and I do!), but I still wanted to share with you a short excerpt from Skye Falling. So, without further pre-amble, check this out. It’s from one of my favourite scenes in the book. Lake has Skye tied up in bed with huge oven mitts on her hands while he talks to the Wolf King on the phone:

Lake leaned toward her. “Your father made sure I interfered. Insisted that I, personally, interfere,” he sneered. “And what help could you need from our pack leader, fairy princess? Did you hope to ensnare him as your mate instead?”

Skye reacted without thinking and, forgetting about the huge oven mitts, slapped his face. The end result was more like a pillow being tossed at his cheek than a real slap but he leaned back, the scorn on his face changing to surprise. “You cannot talk to me like that.” She straightened her spine, calling on her many years of slapping down countless insults, direct and sly, in the Fae Court.

“I have a name and it is Princess Skye Naa, beloved daughter of King Elhi Naa, ruler of the Fae. If you call me fairy princess in that snide tone again I will kick your junk so hard your balls will fly out of your mouth, through the window and onto the street where they will be flattened by a Prius and then eaten by crows who then will crap. On. Your. Car.”

Silence. Her mouth, once again, was quicker than her brain. Threatening an Enforcer who also happened to be second-in-command under the Wolf King, in said Wolf King’s hearing, might be last monumentally foolish thing she did but she lifted her chin, not sorry in the least. A man’s ego was a curious thing, she’d learned, making some of them unpredictable when insulted in front of others. The weaker the man, the uglier the response. But this man, Lake, spoke false to the one person who could help her. No, she wasn’t sorry. If threatening this man meant her death, she would die fighting, her dignity intact, a royal worthy of her father.

Lake cocked his head and blinked once then a slow smile curved his lips. Not the chilling smile from before but a real one that made her knees weak and her heart trip.

“Why a Prius?” His voice was rich with amusement and she could swear he was looking at her differently, like he was seeing her for the first time.

Skye ducked her head, suddenly shy. “It’s emasculating. You know, because you’d have no balls.” She felt her face heat with a blush. Seemed silly to feel this warm glow of pride for simply making Lake smile but there it was.
