Under Glass Excerpt: The Last Men on Earth

With all the excitement around The Naughty List‘s release I haven’t done an Under Glass update in a while. Let’s correct that 🙂

Right now the only story that’s available for sponsorship is still Of Water but I am working on transcribing some of the other stories to get them ready sooner rather than later (I’ve also got a cool idea for the next theme, but that’s a whole other blog post). Right now I’m in the middle of typing up a sexy Mmf post-apocalyptic story I’ve titled The Last Men on Earth.

Here is a very short excerpt:

He growled. Deep. Low in his throat like an animal and her knees went weak. She knew that growl. She knew what came next–

–memories flashed by like images from a flip book, each accompanied by the sound of that growl. Jake buried balls deep in her ass, Jake jerking her hair back so she could see their reflections in the mirror in front of her while he fucked her from behind, the stinging pain of the cane colliding with the cheeks of her ass, leaving raised red welts in its wake, Jake picking her up like she weighed nothing and spanking her until she cried, and then spanking her some more–

Damn it, she wanted what came next.

“Liv,” his voice was low, tight and the vein in his neck which had always been her barometer of how far she was pushing his patience was throbbing. “God damn it. If watching everyone around us die in the plague and the riots and–if that hasn’t taught us not to waste a single goddamn day–”

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re–” The look on his face was almost cartoonish in its absurdity. He’d obviously had a great long speech planned and now she’d ruined it.

I’m hoping to have this one typed up by Friday, keep your fingers crossed. 🙂

My Midnight Cowboy Trivia

NAUGHTY LIST banner

Like I mentioned the other day, we’re sharing some trivia about The Naughty List stories to celebrate the release of the book. Today I’ve got some trivia about Pumpkin Spice’s story, My Midnight Cowboy. You may find this information helpful if you should happen to decide to tackle The Naughty List trivia on Goodreads’ Never-Ending Book Quiz 🙂

My Midnight Cowboy Trivia

from Pumpkin Spice

1. John Wayne Airport, Orange County (SNA) is the only commercial service airport in Orange County, California, which was home to legendary film star John Wayne and…Pumpkin Spice! That’s right the Queen of Spice hails from Sunny So Cal along with “the Duke.” So who’s “Duke” John Wayne? Only the most famous cowboy actor of all time! And here’s some more trivia…John Wayne and Pumpkin Spice have something else in common…they both worked under a stage name! That’s right John Wayne’s real name was Marion Robert Morrison, yeah, I’d work under a stage name too! And Pumpkin Spice? Well let’s just say, there’s some things a girl can’t reveal!

2. “My Midnight Cowboy” wasn’t the first book of erotic romance I’ve had published, but it’s the first book of erotic romance I wrote. After wrapping up a very G-rated, sweet romance, I found myself almost bored by the saccharin ending. And I wrote it! Then I visualized Lucy and her bestie, Rachel, walking into John Wayne Airport on their way to some big adventure – only Lucy was flying solo – literally and figuratively. When this really hot, but super annoying, wise-ass pipes up in line, everything in Lucy’s world tilts on its axis. Ben and Lucy popped off the page and onto the plane, train and back on the plane before I had a chance to put the brakes on the heat that was happening between them. This story wrote itself. So while I had never written erotica, once Lucy started to describe her baking techniques to Ben, well, there was magic in the air. It also didn’t hurt that it was New Year’s Eve, because, really, anything’s possible on the eve of a New Year.

3. There’s a little bit of Pumpkin, or Spice, in each of these characters. At one time in my life, I worked as a recruiter (Rachel), I owned, rode, and cared for horses and cattle on a ranch (Ben & Scott), and I consider myself a quasi-baker (Lucy) with absolutely no culinary training, but I have logged a lot of time watching “Chopped,” “Cupcake Wars,” and “Cake Boss.” I mean, that, counts, right?

On a related note, I’m participating in a holiday giveaway where you can win a paperback copy of The Naughty List (I’ll even sign it for you if you’d like.) Check that out here 🙂

Stealing Time Trivia

NAUGHTY LIST coverTo celebrate the release of The Naughty List I’m going to be sharing some bits of trivia about a few of the stories (I’ll be compiling them into quizzes later 🙂 ). We’re going to start with some trivia about Wendy Sparrow’s story, Stealing Time.

I’m starting with Stealing Time for a couple reasons. One is because it’s the final story in the anthology and I feel like being a bit contrary on my blog. The other, much more important reason, is because Wendy is hosting basically the best giveaway ever, and it’s only going on for a limited time.

One of her main characters, Zeit, has a thing for chocolate oranges. I mean he really has a thing for them. It’s awesome. So to celebrate the release of The Naughty List, she’s giving away chocolate oranges. You can check out all the details here, or us the Rafflecopter code below to enter.

In the meantime, allow me to present some Stealing Time trivia. There are no spoilers here, but you’ll probably appreciate these little tidbits more after reading the story. Well, except for the recipe, that’s awesome all the time 🙂

Stealing Time Trivia

from Wendy Sparrow

1. In Stealing Time, Father Time’s son is named Zeit Geist which means “Time Ghost” is German. I obsessed over various possible names forever even though I liked Zeit right away. Other names I considered were Tyd (Time in Afrikaans), Zaman (Time in Turkish), Tempus (Time in Latin), Vida (Life in Spanish), Vitae (Life in Latin), and Cronos (Stopwatch in Spanish). In the end, I liked some so well that Tempus, Vida, Cronos, and Ruin all became Zeit’s brothers in subsequent novellas.

2. While the lodge in the story doesn’t exist, there are lodges around that do cater to a holiday crowd and I stole some of the activities from their listed activities. It’s my dream to eventually visit one of those places for the holidays.

3. The Fates that determine who lives and dies and the fate of mortals in Stealing Time are from mythology. In Greek mythology, the three Fate sisters (or Moirai) controlled the threads of life. When a mortal’s time was over, one of the sisters would take her shears and snip that mortal’s thread of life. In Stealing Time, they keep trying to kill Hannah in much more dramatic ways.

4. In my novella, Zeit becomes a fiend for chocolate oranges. Art mimics life and I’ve already bought myself two dark chocolate oranges—hopefully one will make it to Christmas day. But, prior to writing this novella, I hadn’t actually tried one. And if you’ve never smacked a chocolate orange—BEST THING EVER!

5. At the lodge, they wake up to a breakfast casserole that’s an old family recipe. When I wrote that, in my mind, this was my best friend’s strata recipe. It’s amazing and I always try to stop eating it before I’m bursting but I never manage. It should be noted, like most delicious things, this is not the most healthy…but we’re all about being naughty during the holidays, right? Here’s the recipe:

Stephanie’s Sourdough Strata

1 lb. pork sausage
10 eggs
3 cups milk
1/4 tsp fresh ground nutmeg (fresh makes a real difference)
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp course kosher salt
10 sourdough English muffins
1 small brick gruyere
1 small brick extra sharp cheddar
White Cheddar (about 1/3 of a 1 lb. brick)

Place sausage in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, and set aside.

In a large bowl whisk eggs and milk until combined. Whisk in spices.

Cut the gruyere and extra sharp cheddar in half. Grate 1/2 of each and set aside the other half. Grate 1/3 of white cheddar.

Grease a 10×13 pan. Split the English muffins in half and place in the pan bumpy side up. Add a layer of sausage. Top with grated cheeses. Put another layer of English muffins halves, bumpy side up. Add a layer of sausage.

Pour egg mixture over the top. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

To bake: heat oven to 325. Cover strata with foil bake about 50-60 min.

Remove foil. Grate remaining halves of gruyere and extra sharp cheddar.

Sprinkle over strata and cook until cheese is melted.

All. The. Things.

NAUGHTY LIST banner

Wow.

So much has happened in the past few days. I barely know where to start, which means this post is going to be a bit point form-y.

First, The Naughty List is out and available now. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, you really should. It’ll be the perfect title to put you in the mood for this month’s holidays. Or put it on your wishlist for Santa!

Speaking of lists, The Naughty List is on a couple Listopia lists. These are just for fun and ego, but if you have a moment would you consider voting for it as a ‘Great Holiday Romance Read‘ and ‘Holiday BDSM‘ book. And of course I understand if you need time to read them first, I’m just throwing the idea out there 🙂

Also, if you were hoping for a chance to win a copy from our Goodreads Giveaway, I have good news and bad news (and then more good news!).

The good news is that the giveaway is closed now and you guys helped me SMASH my goal of 360 entries. In the end, 582 people entered for a chance to win a copy of The Naughty List. That is awesome! Thank you so much for entering!

The bad news is that the winners have been chosen, so unless you were notified that you are one of them, sorry, not this time.

(But you can still pick up a copy from your favourite retailer!)

There’s more Goodreads-related good news because though the giveaway for The Naughty List is over, the one for a copy of Luminous Dreams has just begun (US only, sorry):

I had a successful NaNoWriMo this year. I didn’t write a novel because I was already writing Under Glass but I did write 50,000 words of erotic fiction during November. Yay! I’ve also begun transcribing a new Under Glass story from my notebook to the computer.

Once I’ve finished “Last Men in the World” will become available for sponsorship. Currently only “Of Water” is available for sponsorship (starting from about $6 you can make this available here on my blog for everyone to read) and while it is evocative and beautiful I’m looking forward to sharing my kinky post-apocalyptic story with the world too 🙂

Lastly? People are saying nice things about The Naughty List:

The Tackiest Christmas Displays Ever

NAUGHTY LIST coverTo celebrate the release of The Naughty List I have invited some of the contributors to share guest posts on my blog. This one is from Elizabeth Black, author of “In The Doghouse”.

The Tackiest Christmas Displays Ever

By Elizabeth Black

I’m a sucker for elaborate house decorations for Christmas, especially the outdoor displays. When I lived in Maryland, I lived near a family that lit up their house so brightly for Christmas you could see the glare several blocks away. That house always made the newspapers. Cars paraded by every night. People took pictures. I could only imagine how annoyed the neighbors might have been unless they were full of holiday cheer. Even the Internet got in on the craze. There are Youtube videos of people’s house light displays for Christmas and Halloween. One particular house has been featured on Good Morning America. Twice.

My characters in my story In The Doghouse in the Christmas anthology The Naughty List have entered their neighborhood’s Christmas light display contest. Are Nicky’s and Angela’s houses as garish as what I’ve described above? Nicky did go a step further in his display. He has a zombie nativity scene. I thought I was rather original in coming up with that one, although I have heard of it in years past. Turns out in 2014, someone in Ohio had the same idea. Jasen Dixon erected a zombie nativity scene outdoors for everyone to see.

Jasen Dixon lives in Sycamore Township, Ohio, and the town ordered him to take his display down, saying it violated zoning codes by taking up too much space on his lawn. He did not agree. He had until December 26 to take the display down, which in my mind makes Dixon the winner since he would get to keep the display up all throughout the holiday season.

I read of some other very funny Christmas displays. One guy had his house completely decorated in a garish fashion. The house next door had some lights that spelled out the word “Ditto” with an arrow pointing to the garish house. LOL Another guy dressed his beat up old car in lights with a lit up reindeer on the roof. And then there was the house with the two reindeer light displays getting it on in the yard. Reminds me of what Nicky did to Angela’s dancing snowmen in her front yard. Don’t know what I’m taking about but you’re dying to find out? Buy The Naughty List and read my story In The Doghouse, now!
