No, really. That’s the only possible explanation for why I thought I’d be able to write 90 hours this month and keep up with all the other things on my schedule. I must have been delusional. So far I’ve written 5 hours. On a progress bar that looks a little something like this:
[wppb progress=6]
It’s also about 3 hours short of where I should have been at the start of my day today >_<
So. I don’t know how likely I am to reach 90 hours this month LOL That’s not to say I’m giving up already, I’m not, and discovering if I can pull this off, or how much I fall short will be super helpful in setting my Under Glass goals for next year so it’s all good.
Also? The writing is going well, so there’s that š
I finished off the story I’d been writing and re-writing for-freaking-ever on Tuesday. It used to be called Twin Magic but I’ve re-titled it The Coolest Wife Ever.
I haven’t typed it up yet but I think it’s about 8k words. The Coolest Wife EverĀ is about envy, light kink and finding yourself sexually. It’s also about letting your husband sleep with your twin š
Yesterday I began work on a new story. This one is post-apocalyptic and a lot of fun so far. I haven’t gottenĀ super far into it yet (maybe 3k in what I expect to be about a 15k story) but I intend for it to have some pretty strong D/s themes while also showing that submissive != doormat.
And so it begins. With procrastination. Because of course it does.
But. But I did have to make a blog post announcing this year’s Erotica Under Glass theme, right? So at least it’s like, productive procrastination.
I know, that’s weak but it’s all I’ve got LOL
So, without further ado I present the theme for this year’s Erotica Under Glass…
*insert a drum roll here*
Dun da da dun!
This year’s theme is:
She’s on the Bottom
I’m pretty excited about this theme. I know the person who suggested it well enough to know that they were thinking of it as a riff off He’s on Top and I fully intend to explore that aspect of it, but there are loads of other ways to interpret this theme and I can’t wait to dive into them as well.
I’ll be splitting my writing time between writing longhand in my notebooks, typing straight into Word, and using Write or Die — whatever it takes to stay productive during the four hours a day I need to be writing in order to reach my 90 hour goal. Because of that I won’t be able to provide an exact word count of how much I’ve done in a day but I’ll be able to guesstimate something up. What I’m mostly curious about, though, is how many stories will I have finished by the end of the month.
Do you want to guess?
I’ll send the person whose guess comes closest a signed paperback of Demons, Imps and Incubi.
In the meantime, I’m setting my timer and starting. Wish me luck and don’t forget you’re welcome to send me prompts. I have a few already, I’ll share them as I use them š
To celebrate the release of Anna Kyle’s first book, Skye Falling, I organized a bitty blog tour and because I was organizing it I didn’t feel even a little bit guilty making the first stop my own blog š
My novella, SKYE FALLING, hit the shelves (the internet has shelves, right?) last week and is officially published. YAHOO!!! I even peeked at the Sneak Peek offered at B&N and there were my words, staring back at me.
Iām officially an author. An honest-to-god author.
One day you’re a writer, the next you’re an author.
Hooray! *I lift a glass while dancing*
Holy crap! *I cower in a corner*
Of course, most writers aim for publication. We want folks to read what we wrote with our hot, sweaty fingertips, or sometimes in my case, fingertips glowing an unnatural orange from my comfort food, Cheetos. Iām ecstatic and excited when I remind myself that I love Lakeās and Skyeās story; itās sweet and sexy and funny. I swing to nervous and scared when I wonder what others will think. Then I take a deep breath.
SKYE FALLING is out there. People will love it, like it, orā¦not. So far they seem to like it but itās out of my hands. And thatās scary. Maybe this happy/scared swing is something every writer goes through when their first book is published. Or itās just me. It could very well be just me.
The sheer panic has subsided but Iāve got a fresh bag of orange salty goodness waiting in the cabinet for when it returns, and it will because the next book in the series is on deck.
SKYE FALLING is technically Book 2 in the Wolf King series. Book 1, OMEGA RISING, comes out later this year or early 2016. Huh, you ask. You heard me, I reply.
I started writing The Book (you know, the one rattling around in your head I know you know what Iām talking about). Iād always wanted to and the timing was right. It took a long time (who knew writing a book was so hard? No one ever told me so Iām telling you that writing a book is hard but SO worth the effort). In the middle of that process, Iād get frustrated and stuck (the dreaded sucky-stucky). During one particularly long patch I pulled Lake, a supporting character in The Book, aka OMEGA RISING, because he was so clear in my head and needed an equally awesome heroine. Lakeās and Skyeās story, SKYE FALLING, was accepted by Red Moon Romance and two months later they accepted OMEGA RISING, the loins from which SF sprang to get all biblical on you.
So SKYE FALLING, being a novella that can also stand alone, was published first. Itās a paranormal romance starring Lake, a sexy wolf shapeshifter who always has his friendās back, and Skye, an impulsive Fae halfling princess determined to go around, through, or over Lake to carry out her plan, which never actually goes according to the plan.
Their story was so much fun to write. I hope you love reading it.
My latest foray into this experiment I call Erotica Under Glass is about to begin. I’m excited and nervous.
What is writing under glass? I’m so glad you asked LOL Allow me to copy my answer from a 2013 blog post:
What is Writing Under Glass?
Good question. The thing is, writing is usually a very solitary, introverted activity but every once in a while itās fun to shake things up. One way to do that is to undertake a writing exercise like Harlan Ellisonās āStories Under Glassā where he would go to a bookstore and write a story in its window based on an idea or prompt given to him by someone else, or like Elizabeth Barretteās Poetry Fishbowls where she takes that idea, puts it online and cyberfunds it.
As I predicted in that post a couple years ago, my system is still evolving. I really like what I’ve come up with this year though š
How Does It Work?
My primary goal is going to be to write for a minimum of 90 hours this month. Because I usually take weekends off that adds up to about four hours a day for each of my working days in September. That’s going to be a pretty big challenge for me all by itself but writing under glass isn’t supposed to just be about challenging myself to write a lot, it’s supposed to be about writing in public, or interacting with the public as part of the process. So there’s more!
You can’t actually watch me write like people could Harlan Ellison, and I’m not looking to monetize this process (though, ya know, if I suddenly become famous that might change LOL) so I’m still tweaking my system and trying to find a way to make it actually interactive and engaging.
The best way I can think to do that right now is to allow you to help guide what I write, and follow along with the progress.
How To Participate:
There are several ways to participate.
The first way to join in would be to suggest a theme for me to use to frame my writing for September. That can be anything from a genre to a heat level, a preferred pairing or a theme. I can’t use anything that’s too specific* (frex: all-blonde Ff bondage stories with extremely high heat levels, purple leather restraints, high heels and a red flogger) because that will be too limiting to write about for 90 hours, but any one of the aspects from that suggestion could work (frex: Ff stories, bondage stories, stories about blondes, stories with super high heat levels, high heel stories, flogger stories).
Previously I’ve worked without a theme and also had one year where my theme was “Panties“.
The year where I was writing with a panties theme I began what was supposed to be a short story but it kept growing and growing… eventually it became a novella. When I returned to that story to edit it I found huge issues with it so I retired it and began re-writing. I’m still working on that new draft of the story and it doesn’t even come close to resembling where it started.
This may happen even with the stories I write in September, though I’ll begin with them framed within the theme by the time they are completed and published/shared here, you may not be able to recognize the theme within them any more.
If you’d like to suggest a theme, please leave a comment here or ping me on Twitter with it. I will fully consider all suggestions sent to me but I need to begin writing on Tuesday so there is a limited time to get your ideas in to me.
Another way to support my erotica under glass experiment and participate in it is to offer me story prompts. These can take the form of an image prompt (bonus points if it’s from fotolia so I can potentially use it for the story’s cover when it’s completed) or text prompts. As with the theme suggestions I will consider all ideas sent my way and try to implement as many of them as possible. Those can be made via comment here, email or on Twitter and I’ll accept them up until September 27th at which point I should be typing ‘The End’ on a bunch of pieces, not starting new ones.
*While something this specific wouldn’t work as an overall theme for the month, depending upon the monthly theme this might work as an individual story prompt.
To start things off I asked Anna and Alexa to send me prompts. I’ve been privileged enough to edit their work, offering suggestions on it, I thought they might like a chance to turn the tables a bit. Both of them accepted the offer and I’ll share their prompts once we get underway.
Spoiler:
Alexa’s first prompt
Finally, any suggestions which are sent to me and accompanied by proof of a charitable donation (I suggest Save the Chimps or Fauna Foundation) will be bumped to the top of my prompt list and I will consider it non-optional for me to write something based on them.
A quick word about prompts: I won’t write anything without clear consent. Also on my big list of nope is pseudo-incest, watersports, eroticide or scatplay. That list is not exhaustive so if you’re not sure, ask me before you make a prompt-related donation.
What Happens To The Stories?
Over the course of the month I will update you regularly on what I’m writing, how long I’m writing and offer short excerpts of what I’ve written. I will also post at least 10% of what I write on my blog here for everyone to enjoy (ideally this will be based on # of stories but if my work tends toward longer pieces it may be based on # of words).
Once the month is over I will post a list with descriptions, word counts, excerpts and two price points for everything I wrote in September.
You will then have the opportunity to sponsor a story (or poem) at one of those price points by making a donation of the appropriate amount to your favourite charity *cough* Save the Chimps or Fauna Foundation *cough*.
Stories sponsored at the highest price point (about 1 cent a word) will be immediately shared here on my blog for free. They will then go through the publication process (including editing by myself as well as an independent editor) and be produced as a book which will then be distributed for free at all the usual locations.
Stories sponsored at the lower price point will be immediately shared here on my blog for free. They will then go through the publication process (including editing by myself as well as an independent editor) and be produced as a book which will then be sold for a token amount at all the usual locations. Once the book is published the story will be taken down from my blog.
If I used your prompt when I wrote the story you will be able to sponsor the story at a discounted rate.
Yeah But–
I see you scratching your head and saying, “Uh, why would I donate to charity to supply a prompt for you to write to? How do I even know you can write what I’m looking for?” And, well you don’t, I guess. But for one thing the money isn’t going to me it’s going to charity so you’re doing a good thing here no matter what. For another thing for several years my job was to ghostwrite sex stories and supply porn sites with erotic story content.
I’ve written commissioned stories before, I can write pretty much any erotic sub-genre you can think of and I do it well. Besides, I didn’t say how much you had to donate, did I?
Any Questions?
I think this is the longest blog post I’ve ever written here LOL I’ve done my best to be complete and explain as much as I can, but it’s definitely possible I’ve missed something. If you have any questions or suggestions please drop me a line and I’ll do my best to clear ’em up.
If you have any prompts or theme ideas, hit me up. There’s no time like the present for me to start brainstorming š
Question and Answers:
Q: You keep saying ‘Erotica’ under glass, but does the story have to be all about the sex?
A: Uh… it doesn’t have to be all about the sex but it does have to have some degree of heat to it. I struggle with writing chaste romance and so a period when I am aiming to produce a fair amount of work is not a good time for me to try and tackle them. Depending on my prompts and mood I could write anything from a short set-up followed by a steamy sex scene to a fully-developed novella with plots, sub-plots and sexy interludes.
Skye, a Fae-shapeshifter halfing, could die if she doesnāt find out how to wake her dormant wolf, so mere rumors of the Wolf Kingās return are enough to convince her to sneak through the portal between Faerie and Chicago in search of his aid. But the dizzyingly bright lights and sounds of the human realm are too tempting to ignore. So is the sexy shapeshifter wolf intent on capturing herāthe one who stirs her sleeping wolf just long enough to bind the handsome stranger in a mate-bond.
Lake is willing to do anything to protect the Wolf King, a man he also calls friend. So when he receives word that a Fae princess has slipped into Chicago, he suspects a plot to assassinate the Wolf King. Heās certain capturing her will be as easy as locating herāthat was his first mistake. Not only is his wolf a little too interested in Skye, but the wolf accepts her mate-bond without any say-so from him. As he unravels the truth surrounding the smart-mouthed princess and whether sheās hunting his friend or being hunted by someone else, Lakeās mission changes: protect Skye at all costs. And keep her for himself.
I am super biased because not only did I edit this book, I freaking adore Anna. But. I can honestly say that even if those biases didn’t exist I would still love Lake and Skye.
If you like paranormal romance consider giving this one a read. It’s short, steamy and it’ll whet your appetite for the next book in the series.
(And once you’ve read it, please consider leaving an honest review at Amazon and Goodreads. Reviews are better than chocolate. Fer realz.)
